Principles of Public Health ("PH 101")
OVERVIEW
Description: This course consists of 12 tutorials that provide an overview of the most important issues and topics related to public health departments and public health practice. Developed as a basic introduction for the public health workforce, each tutorial takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. A Spanish version of PH 101 is also available.
Length: Approximately 3-4 hours
Learning Objectives: By the end of this training, a participant will be able to:
- Articulate the core concept of public health and list three examples of public health issues, past and/or present.
- Describe the primary ways in which health is measured in populations as well as major determinants of individual health, and how these factors affect the health of populations.
- Identify health disparities, factors that contribute to them, and the role of the public health workforce in helping to reduce disparities in health.
- Recognize basic concepts and factors surrounding culture and health, and the impact of cultural factors on public health programs.
- Describe the public health infrastructure, the core functions and essential services of public health, evaluation in public health, and community needs assessment.

- Public Health: Definition and History: Provides a historical overview of the public health model and outlines the five fields of public health.
- Health Status and Determinants of Health: Describes the primary ways health is measured in populations, the major determinants of individual health, and how these factors affect the health of populations.
- Health Disparities: Summarizes differences in the rates of illness and disease that exist among specific populations and the role of public health in helping to reduce these disparities.

- Evaluation: Describes basic methods and steps used in an evaluation and why evaluation is important to the public health workforce.
- Community Needs Assessment: Overviews five steps involved in conducting a community needs assessment to help meet the health needs of a community.
- Future Challenges of Public Health: Summarizes the current and future challenges of public health and how these health outcomes can be addressed through programs, education, and policy.
